Local schools benefit from school meals service innovation
School Meal Services in Southampton have, for many years now, been rightly regarded as among the best in the country. For many years City Catering, the local authority service that provides the majority of Southampton school meals has been accredited as the highest rated local authority caterer under the Hospitality Assured, the premier award for business and service excellence within the hospitality industry.
From 1st April 2015 those schools that use City Catering’s quality school meal services will benefit from being members of an innovative new business model that is designed to give schools a greater say in how the school meal service in Southampton evolves.
City Catering Southampton, a charitable company, owned by those schools that it caters for, will spin out of Southampton City Council and begin trading on 1st April 2015. The new business will benefit from the strengths of the City Catering service of the past while being better placed to develop services that support the delivery of nutritious meal services at affordable prices, while supporting schools in raising academic attainment and meeting their obligations under the school food plan.
Steve Price, CEO of City Catering Southampton said “While I expect our first year of trading to be one focused on consolidation I’m confident that our new business model will see us ideally placed to support our member schools to raise the profile of food in schools, not only in the dining hall but also in the classroom and within the parental community. The school food plan places great emphasis on head teachers and schools and our role will be to support them in delivering their obligations while providing the very best school meal services.
As a charity our aim will be to support schools, both through grant funding, and as an information and advice resource with cookery classes for children and parents, supporting apprenticeships and further education for students and care leavers as well as providing meal services to vulnerable adults through our City Care Meal services”.
