Assistant Cook - Springhill School
City Catering are a Charity, that provide great quality, nutritious meals to Primary and Secondary School Children throughout Southampton.
What Are We Looking For?
We are looking for an experienced Assistant Cook who understands our charitable mission and can support the Head of Kitchen in our Springhill School.
The role works with our school team to assist the site’s Head of Kitchen in providing a high quality and friendly catering service, in line with our defined standards of quality. In this role you will be expected to supervise kitchen staff and deputise in the Head of Kitchens' absence.
The role is 27.5 hrs weekly with an hourly rate paid of £12.03 per hour (Term Time Only)
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation, cooking and service of food as directed to the specifications defined by City Catering Southampton
- Ensure any transported meals are prepared, cooked and packaged to maximise quality
- Assist in the planning, preparation, cooking and service of food for special functions, emergency catering and theme days
- Implement our special diet and allergen menus and procedures where appropriate
- Maintain up-to-date records, where appropriate using the technology provided eg. temperature checks, cleaning routine, timesheets, meal numbers
- Operate equipment according to the manufacturer instructions and report on any equipment or maintenance requirements
- Assist in the dining area where appropriate: setting up, clearing away and cleaning of tables and chairs; and cleaning of the dining area floor at the end of service
- Washing up, clearing away and general cleaning duties
- Ensure the kitchen work area, equipment and dining areas are continually kept clean and tidy
- Present a smart, professional appearance, ensuring high levels of personal hygiene at all times
- Loading and unloading food, tableware and catering supplies, ensuring that all food and other items are stored correctly in line with food safety legislation
- Understand the financial implication of food preparation, set an example to others by working in ways that minimise waste, control ingredients and resources to reduce the cost per meal
What Do You Need To Have?
Experience of supporting a kitchen, preferably in a school setting, and a knowledge of food preparation and cooking including methods, portions, cost control, stock rotation and ordering.
The ability to lead, motivate and manage colleagues well.
A knowledge of common food allergens and special diets.
A knowledge of food safety/kitchen hygiene and HACCP. An NVQ/Level 2 qualification in Food Safety Hygiene (or equivalent) would be advantageous.
Absolute and unquestionable commitment to the Safeguarding of the schools children. (This position is subject to a successful DBS clearance, the cost of which is covered by the Charity).
Numeracy, budgetary skills and literacy in using IT.
Experience in the training and development of colleagues.
