Neighbourhood quiz raises £121 for City Catering Southampton

There are so many ways you can help us raise funds for City Catering Southampton.  Kim Romero of Whiteley hosted a quiz night for her neighbours and raised £121, smashing her original goal of £25 by 484%! We've seen lots of people get involved in virtual quizzing to stay in touch with their friends and family - so we spoke to Kim to see how she turned a social gathering into a chance to raise funds for charity.

When Kim decided to host an online quiz night for her neighbours, she knew it was a great opportunity to help raise funds for City Catering Southampton.

“One of my neighbours had put together a really fun quiz over the Easter weekend, and my family won!  I offered to host the next quiz and asked the participating families to donate a few pounds to City Catering Southampton.”

She was amazed at how generous her neighbours turned out to be.

“There are about six or seven families that are participating in the weekly quizzes online, and I was hoping each one would donate £3.  I was shocked when we raised over £100 for City Catering Southampton.  It just goes to show how well a community can pull together when they have a goal.”

Kim found the process of setting up a JustGiving page to raise funds for City Catering Southampton to be a breeze.

“I just went to the main CCS JustGiving page and clicked on “Fundraise for us.”  I chose Personal Challenge and followed the process from there.  It was easy to set up and to share the link with my neighbours and on my Facebook page.”

It was also easy enough to set up the quiz.

“We used Google Hangouts to host the videoconferencing so we could all see each other and share my screen,” Kim said.  “I’m sure you could use Zoom or Skype, or even House Party.  For the quiz questions, we used Kahoot!, but I’ve heard of other quiz builders like Interact, too.”

The hardest part was pulling together the questions.

“I decided on 10 questions over 5 topics, and we needed things that would be kid-friendly as well, I chose Transportation, Movies/TV, Sport, History/Geography, and a Mixed Bag category.  Our questions ranged from, ‘What’s the longest river in Italy?’ to ‘What’s the name of Applejack’s brother on My Little Pony?’  All of the families loved getting involved and I had some great feedback on how much fun it was for everyone.”

Kim recommends setting up a fundraising page for any social activities you might be engaging in right now.

“I know a lady who raised over £3,000 for her favourite charity by shaving her head online and sharing a link for those who had donated.  It’s a great way to do good for others even while we’re stuck inside.”

Everyone at City Catering is so grateful for Kim's support!
